Norman & Underwood craftsmen carried out essential repairs and maintenance to this grade 1 listed Jacobean mansion in Hampshire, which today houses the national Police Staff College.
The contract required traditional carpentry, lead roofing, masonry and plastering skills, all carried out to modern quality standards. This created many challenges, not least the need to manoeuvre 7.3m long, 750kg steel plates up into a confined roof space and insert them into 250 year old oak beams.
The existing lead-works, including roof sheets and gutters were recast and re-laid, and repairs carried out to the rainwater goods. We also fabricated new downpipes and lead hoppers, with the same intricate detailing as the originals, for the South elevation.
