A famous London landmark gets a new copper crown as Norman & Underwood craftsmen have just completed a 15-week project at The Grand Priory Church of St John of Jerusalem in Clerkenwell to restore the historic building’s copper roof.


March 2003 - SALISBURY CATHEDRAL - PHASE 4

Work commenced on 14th April 2003 to replace the existing lead on the eastern roof slopes of both the north east and south east transepts and the northern roof slope of the presbytery.

October 2001 - SALISBURY CATHEDRAL - PHASE 2

Norman & Underwood are in the process of completing a recently acquired contract for work on the second phase of the Salisbury Cathedral re-roofing contract. The contract will involve replacing the lead on the nave roof of the north aisle, which has failed due to the breakdown of the existing fixings.

June 2000 - SALISBURY CATHEDRAL - PHASE 1

Norman & Underwood’s Roofing Division have won a huge contract to re-roof the North Porch and North Isle of Salisbury Cathedral. The enormous project will require around 45 tonnes of lead to complete the restoration of this prestigious historic building.


March 1997 - HEREFORD CATHEDRAL

The initial work on the nave roof commenced several years ago, many of the roofs have been restored since, including the new building housing the Mappa Mundi.

August 1992 - THE DOME OF THE ROCK, JERUSALEM

Norman & Underwood received the enquiry for this contract in May 1992 and submitted the quotation by early June. We beat competition from five other contractors and secured the contract in August 1992.

January 1990 - ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL

Client: the Dean and Chapter.

The contract was carried out over a 2½ year period, using 110 tonnes of sand cast lead, weighing 48.5 kilos per metre square. Subsequent work carried out to the chancel roof, nave roof and north and south west towers.

January 1989 - YORK MINSTER

Architect: Dr Charles Brown RIBA.

The south transept roof re-covered in sand cast lead, subsequently destroyed by fire on the 9th July 1984 and replaced by us using 49 tonnes of lead, with 26,200 copper nails used throughout the lead work.

January 1988 - ST MAGNUS CATHEDRAL, ORKNEY

The Spire was totally recovered in copper in 1993, the company was the outright winner of the Copper Developments Association copper roofing competition, together with the John Smith award for craftsmanship in 1993.

January 1987 - WESTMINSTER ABBEY 1987

The company's long association with the abbey began in 1954 and has carried on periodically since. Work included total replacement of lead work to the nave, north and south transepts and apse roof, together with cornices on the west towers.
