Lymm Water Tower, Cheshire

Norman & Underwood were extremely delighted to be awarded the contract to supply and fit Planar frameless double glazed windows to an unusual Victorian water tower conversion on the outskirts of the Cheshire town of Lymm.

This project consists of a five-storey Victorian water tower on to which the owners added an elegant circular suite of rooms as an extension onto the lower levels.

Planar heat soaked double glazed units were used and consisted of 12mm toughened outer glass, 16mm cavity and 6mm toughened inner glass.  Heat soaking ensures that all traces of nickel is removed from the glass to provide the windows with added strength.

As this is a frameless system black silicone was used in between the panes of glass as a weather sealant, again to enhance durability.

Glass infill panels were added in between the castellated stonework forming the top of the tower to act as a safety barrier for the viewing platform.

Wayne Heathcote, glazing surveyor, who worked on the contract said

“It was an unusual residential project to work on and looks superb now that it is finished”

The whole project from initial design through planning and then completion took eight years.

The converted water tower has won numerous design awards and the owners’ production company made a documentary on the build for UKTV.
