Westminster Abbey 2003 Westminster Abbey Contract Team Norman & Underwood will help restore one of the country’s most architectural important buildings as today we have won the prestigious contract to repair the roofs of Westminster Abbey. The six-figure contract will be to replace lead on the Abbey’s South Aisle roof and carry out works to the South East Triforium roof. The contract win continues our proud history of restoration work at the Abbey. We first undertook work on the building during the 1920s. We have since helped replace the lead of the Abbey’s nave roof during the 1950s and the famous West Towers in the 1990s. Jonathan Castleman, our Roofing & Stained Glass Division Director, said: “The Westminster Abbey contract win is a major achievement for Norman & Underwood and shows that we are one of the best restoration companies in the world. “We beat good tenders from three rivals to win the contract, so it is particularly pleasing to get such a celebrated contract in a fiercely competitive market. “Winning the contract is also an immense personal honour. Seven generations of my family have looked after equally prestigious work since the company was founded by my great, great, great grandfather 178 years ago. “My second cousin John Underwood oversaw the re-leading of the Abbey’s nave and towers during the 1950s, so it’s a real privilege to be able to continue this company and family tradition of working on such an historic building.” We are renowned throughout the UK for using traditional sand-cast lead in the major restoration of many historic buildings, including Salisbury Cathedral, Chatsworth House and Dorchester Abbey.
