Rochdale Town Hall

In 1988 Norman & Underwood won a prestigious contract to refurbish the stained glass windows of Rochdale Town Hall. The windows are situated in the Great Hall and at the top of the grand staircase.

This contract was worth approximately £200,000 and took two years over a rolling programme.

Each magnificent window represents a monarch of the time and depicts their coat of arms and brief details of their history. The hall consists of monarchs as far back as King John right up to Queen Victoria.

Work on the town hall was commissioned because most of the 132 year old windows had 'bowed' and showed major signs of wear and tear.

Work started with a team of four specialist glaziers de-glazing and re-glazing the windows with clear glass to keep out the elements.

The 'priceless' windows were carefully packaged and transported back to our headquarters in Leicester where they were thoroughly cleaned and re-leaded by our master craftsmen.

A team of six stained glass experts were on hand in our stained glass studio restoring the windows to their previous glory.

It was reported that the MP of Rochdale at the time Mr Cyril Smith, kept a very close eye on this project as did the people of Rochdale. They were very interested in the progress and were obviously very protective of their heritage.

This project was programmed over a two year period as it was considered too great a risk to have 'all' of the stained glass transported and in the same place at any one time.

It has also been reported that Gracie Fields used to sing in the Great Hall and attend tea parties there.

When asked to comment on this project, Sean Flynn one of the specialist glaziers commented,

"This was a terrific project to be involved with and the warmth and friendliness of the Rochdale people will always stay in my memory."
