Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, recently gave her personal seal of approval to Leicester heritage specialists, Norman & Underwood for refurbishment work undertaken to the stained glass windows of St Laurences Church in Ludlow.
The companys glazing manager, Sean Flynn, was invited by The Revd Brian Curnew of St Laurences Church to a special ceremony, at which The Princess Royal unveiled a plaque to commemorate the completion of restoration work carried out at the church.
At the ceremony, Mr. Flynn gave a short presentation on the stained glass refurbishment work, and also gave a brief overview of the companys 175 year history.
This covered the companys involvement in other major national and international stained glass projects, which have included the Leathersellers Hall and the Data Dabar Mosque in Lahore, all of which were well received by the Royal guest and other prestigious dignitaries.
The companys work was complimented by The Princess Royal and she showed a keen interest in the processes and techniques used by the Leicester companys highly skilled stained glass craftsmen.
Commented Mr. Flynn. Many of the designs on the churchs Victorian stained glass windows had deteriorated over time and had to be re-crafted by the companys specialist stained glass studio, which also re-leaded the majority of the churchs windows.
In addition, and due to the unique structure of the church, some of the larger windows, such as the famous Lantern Windows, were extremely difficult to access.
The Princess Royal commented on how beautiful the windows looked, and complimented the company on its craftsmanship, especially considering the difficulty involved with the complex structure of the church itself.
This is not the first time that the company has enjoyed links with the Royal Family, as the Stained Glass Division has recently undertaken work on the Palace of Westminster.
