Norman & Underwoods Roofing & Stained Glass Division has secured a second prestigious contract at Salisbury Cathedral, building on the strength of the excellent work the firm recently carried out on the Cathedrals nave.
The internationally renowned roofing specialists are to replace the lead and restore the timberwork of the Cathedrals North Transept, North Choir and North Choir Aisles. This job will require over 150 tonnes of lead, which will be cast and transported to Salisbury from Norman & Underwoods own sand cast lead facility at the Company headquarters in the centre of Leicester.
This major contract will require eight of the firms most experienced roofing craftsmen, working on the roofs lead, existing boarding and timberwork.
Undertaking repairs to the oakwork of the various roofs, the firm will make good use of its recently acquired £10,000 microboring equipment, which helped to ensure the structural stability of the oak timbers in previous phases of work carried out by the Company.
Norman & Underwoods craftsmen will again work closely with the Cathedrals architects, archaeologists and structural engineers, ensuring that all work carried out preserves the original features of the Cathedral.
Jonathan Castleman, Norman & Underwoods Roofing & Stained Glass Division Director comments: We are very pleased to gain the contract to restore and preserve the fabric of this fine building.
The majority of our work is through recommendation, and to continually gain contracts in this way, helps to further establish the Company amongst the industrys leading craftsmen.
Norman & Underwoods Roofing & Stained Glass Division is also currently working on Chatsworth House and Canterbury Cathedral and has also just been awarded the Copper Development Associations Highly Commended for Craftsmanship Certificate.
