07 June 2001 Roofing Specialists Answer 7,000 Mile Emergency Call A roofing expert from internationally renowned roofing restoration specialists, Norman & Underwood has travelled around 7,000 miles to give advice on how best to restore the copper roofs on Bermuda Cathedral. Jonathan Castleman, the company’s roofing division director, who last year delivered lead roofing seminars to some of the UK’s leading heritage figures, flew to the Caribbean island at the personal invitation of the Bishop of Bermuda. Mr Castleman, who has supervised repair work to the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, British Embassies in Moscow and Korea and some of the UK’s most historic buildings, presented the Cathedral council with a report on the condition of the copper roofs. The council were also advised on the actual repair and continued maintenance of the Cathedral roof. Located in the city of Hamilton, and boasting Gothic and Middle English architecture, The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity was completed in 1911 after 25 years of construction. In 1926 a new copper roof was installed to replace the damaged tiled roof caused by successive hurricanes. This work was completed in 1927. The Cathedral is a noted Caribbean landmark, constructed from limestone and granite from as far away as Scotland and France. The Bishop of Bermuda, The Rt. Rev. Ewan Ratteray, commented: “The Cathedral roof has survived hurricanes and over 80 years of tropical weather, but now it is finally showing signs of disrepair.
