Norman & Underwood Conservation is one of the leading stone masonry restoration contractors in the UK. We combine technical expertise with extensive practical experience to undertake masonry repairs on any historical or architectural restoration and conservation project.
We understand the complexities of stone as a material and the different natures of various stone types. We always take time to consider the historic and aesthetic context of the project before any work begins, such as sourcing the correct fines of sand to match the existing area. Our masonry experts can advise on all aspects on stone selection, cleaning and restoration, and have considerable expertise in diagnosing underlying problems in stonework to devise appropriate conservation plans.
Norman & Underwood has a dedicated team of traditional stone masons, including the following specialist craftsmen:
- Banker Masons - carve stone in intricate profiles to match existing designs. We produce all types of mouldings from simple chamfers to tracery windows and detailed moulded profiles such as strings and cornices.
- Carvers - create new stonework designs, including foliage, figures, animals or abstract patterns.
- Fixer Masons - specialise in fixing stones onto modern and historic buildings using traditional methods.
We can undertake large and small historic building restoration and conservation projects and are experienced in working as main contractor or a specialist stone masonry sub-contractor. We can also undertake stonework surveys and materials testing and compile reports. All our work is completed to the highest possible standards, in close liaison with the client, architects and consultants.
